Cigar Mold Shelves

While out shopping at the flohmarkts in Germany, I noticed so many people buying these weird wooden things. Many of the women had carts full of them. I would always look and wonder what in the world are they going to do with them. After seeing this multiple times, I figured I must have to have them too!!!! I, of course, bought these weird wooden box things, not really knowing what to do with them or what they really were. Later, I discovered they were old cigar molds. So cool!!! I knew I wouldn’t be rolling any cigars with them so I kept thinking of what I could do with them. One day I saw a post on one of the many facebook pages about making them into shelves. Such an amazing idea!!!

The most difficult part of this project is finding the cigar molds. I have not seen many of then in the US, although that doesn’t not mean they aren’t out there. They were very easy to find in Europe and also very inexpensive. All the parts I used to hang them I found at Home Depot in the plumbing section.  There are many ways to hang these shelves and it really comes down to what look you are going for and your personal preference. I chose to use pipe fittings which come in multiple colors, silver, gold, or a dark gray/black. This makes it super easy to fit into any decor. Three parts were needed to get these hung on the wall; the flange, nipple, and the cap. Be sure to check the sizing and make sure they all match. I used ½ inch for my shelves.  I had 3 shelves to hang, so I needed 6 of each of the parts.

Next step was to hang the pipe fittings which took lots and lots of measuring. This is where I enlist the help of my math-loving husband, although it usually means I will have to caulk lots of extra holes in the wall!! He handled all the hole lining up and drilling in of the pipe flange and we put the nipple and cap onto each of the shelves. Lastly, we placed the Cigar Molds on top of the pipe fittings. I am sure there is more you can do to make them secure but for the small items I am using it for it didn’t seem necessary. Now the fun part, decorating…so many different decor items can be placed on the shelves. It really all depends on the season and look you might be going for!!

Here is how Jessie used the same idea in her Powder Room:
