No Girls Allowed…Boy’s Room Renovation

Being military, moving into a new house in always an adventure and somehow the rooms never work out in our favor. The girls always pick the rooms that are painted traditional boy colors and the boys inevitably get stuck with the bright pink and purple girly room. This move was no different…of course!!

Brock’s room started off as one of the rooms in the house that didn’t need too much work. But, in true Jessie fashion it turned into a one of a kind boy’s mountain retreat…now if he would only sleep in there…but that is for a whole other blog!!

The floors were the first to go in the entire house, not just this room. It is always a challenge with allergies and moving. You never know what has gone on in the carpet before you…trust me and my black light…gross!

Next on to the painting of the mountains. As you see in this next photo the steps were a little backwards. In hindsight the background (blue part) should have been painted first and then the mountains. But, the original idea was to keep the blue as sky. It just didn’t look right in the end. Lots of painters tape and measuring later the mountains started coming together. Different color gray paint was used to create depth. For the tops, white paint was used to create a snowcapped mountain look.

Now on to the real fun part…decorating!!!  It was so awesome to be able to incorporate some of the European treasures we spent 3 years accumulating into a home. Printer trays are a very popular items to search out at the European flohmarkts (similar to flea markets in the US). They have lots of small openings just perfect for a little boy’s car collection.

Another item found in the flohmarkts is wooden wine crates. They can be used for so many things…books, shoes, toys, pretty much any storage need. In Brock’s room, they made a perfect side table for holding his lamp and some toys. I’ve also seen these all over the place in the states, Amazon, Walmart, Home Goods…so on. For Brock’s room they were painted with Annie Solan chalk paint using #4 Aubusson.

A few more of the items (cloud shelves, wall hangings, no girls allowed sign) were bought online & from another favorite store, Hobby Lobby…and another tip for the ladies still living in Europe…Hobby Lobby sells a lot of the “must have” decor items. It is amazing how many things we stressed over getting before we returned from Europe only to walk into a store and see it right there!
